“I don’t have access to a MMA training gym in my local town, and I was wondering if I bought the P90X2 workout system do you think it would help me train in MMA?

Answer:  Although I think the P90X workout system and the P90x2 are one of the best fitness and workout training systems out there I don’t think it would take the place of authentic MMA Training.  If you could do the P90x2 workout series in addition to a program like The PIT WORKOUT along with some technical expertise from Greg Jackson in his book The Ground Game, I think you would be moving in a very good direction in training for MMA since you don’t have access to a local MMA training Gym.

So, if you take this advise you will be in great shape and on your way to learning some great fundamental ground game techniques from Greg Jackson’s book and well on your way in your MMA training.  However, when and if you have a chance to get into a MMA school nothing is better then getting on the mat, ring, or octagon and rubbing elbows with other MMA fighters.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers many fitness advantages to young children that many other more common sports may not. The martial arts school where I train has a Columbia kids martial arts program, and I have seen first hand how jiu-jitsu can positively affect young children, emotionally,mentally, and physically.

By improving their competency in the martial arts, children are able to improve their self-confidence which makes them less of a target for bullies.. Children can not receive their belts (their “goal”) without regular attendance; this teaches kids the importance of discipline and goal setting..  Children learn moves, then drill them, and practice them in class with partners. When a child successfully implements moves for the first time it is very rewarding and gives them a sense of accomplishment. Self confidence is developed as a byproduct of the child achieving their goals..  Bullies are drawn to children that appear to be weak so as the demeanor of the child becomes stronger, the chances of the child being bullied decreases.

At my Columbia martial arts school, children also develop a strong self-discipline. It is a result of the training process and cooperating with the teachers and other students.. In order to progress in jiu-jitsu, students must train on a regular basis. Self discipline is formed through the child’s dedication and hard work.. Students also gain this attribute from instructors and other students because they gain a sense of respect through regular interaction and sparring.  If you are lucky enough to find a martial arts program that has legitimate athletes and instructors, then the children will also see the discipline that is required for the instructors themselves to succeed in the martial arts and begin to mimic it.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu also provides children with the basic advantage of fitness itself. This martial art requires muscle strength and cardiovascular endurance, but it is achieved differently than in most sports. This martial art focuses specifically on functional multi-directional strength.  You can not get big and bulky like a bodybuilder nor can you be stick-thin like a marathon runner.

Children enjoy getting fit through Jiu Jitsu and other martial arts because it is not as boring as other exercise programs.. My school’s Columbia kids martial arts program has provided children with these fitness advantages and changed children for the better. By training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu young children not only gain and grow as a better moral individual, but also are able to stay physically fit.
