Should Kids Learn MMA?

It seems that a popular trend emerging as of late is youth Mixed Martial Arts. Kids have always been participants of other forms or martial arts such as karate or Taekwondo, but in recent years more kids are taking up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or MMA classes. Gyms have specific classes designed for young athletes to teach them the same things that adult Mixed Martial Artists are learning. There is no shortage of kids MMA gear that can help keep your child safe while they are training.  Some people feel that teaching MMA to youth is bad because it promotes fighting and makes kids bully’s.

MMA vs. Traditional (Taekwondo, Karate, & Judo)

Kids MMA GearIn reality kids MMA classes teach the opposite of what the antagonists believe. They teach a lot of the same principles that the traditional karate and Taekwondo schools do such as respect, working with others, discipline, self-defense, a positive attitude,  and more. Yes, the kids are learning how to kick and punch but they are also learning when to kick and when to punch. They are taught the importance of not fighting outside of the gym and how to stand up for themselves without having to get physical.

Youth MMA Classes

Youth Mixed Martial Arts classes are no different than other youth sports. Parents assume that because kids are learning to fight that they will want to use these techniques on other kids. What parents don’t understand is that kids learn aggressive behavior through sports such as football, hockey, soccer, basketball, baseball and more. They are just as likely to find themselves in a fight on the football field as they do is their gym, except the kids in the gym will know better than to throw punches and kicks in anger for fear of being kicked out of the gym.

Benefits Of Kids MMA

MMA for kids is a good thing because it gives them an activity that they can take part in for the rest of their lives. It teaches them hard work and shows them that their success is determined by what they put in. It also teaches team work because if they do well then they represent their team and can root for their friends and fellow athletes. Plus the kids train together in class and help their fellow teammates learn various techniques. Before parents and the public judge youth MMA as violent and bad they need to do more research and attend a kids class to see what the children are actually learning. They may find out that their opinion was not what was really taking place in class.
