Although the sport of MMA is incredibly popular today, it had to start somewhere. The history of mixed martial arts is one that actually doesn’t go back that far. Yes it has been around for over ten years but in comparison to other sports such as basketball which was invented in 1891 and soccer in 1863, it is easy to see how short a time of time a decade is internationally of sports. This was a full contact sport that individuals were not used to seeing and they found it interesting and exciting. Today athletes in MMA are much more versatile and well rounded as they study all types of fighting as a way to have the most advantage over their opponent. The athletes in MMA are so well rounded today that fighters from the initial UFC fights wouldn’t likely stand up alongside them. Gracie was the winner of UFC 1, 2 and 3 and continued to reign united of the large names in the game for the first five years or so after MMA was first introduced to the world.
Other members of the Gracie family are likewise in MMA and that includes his father Helio Gracie and his brother Carlos Gracie. New faces began to surface as the sport became most liked, like Ken Shamrock and Matt Hughes. The alterations from the MMA then and the MMA sport now are incredible.
