You’re not supposed to have three wins in the UFC a week away from your 22nd birthday but that’s exactly where Jon Jones sits after dominating another light heavyweight. Frankly you’re not reallly supposed to have much of a striking game just two years removed from spending your teens as a wrestler but Jones is a unique dude. He’s big for the weight at 6-foot-5 with an 84 1/2 inch reach and his athleticism is off the charts. Jones (9-0, 3-0 UFC) flashed kicks, knees and punches throughout the first seven minutes but it was another spinning back elbow that set up the finish. Jones landed an elbow that rocked Jake O’Brien. When O’Brien dropped down to buy some time with a takedown he left his head exposed. Jones locked on a choke and put O’Brien out a few seconds later at 2:43 of the second round.
"I was just trying to be a better wrestler than Jake," said Jones, who was facing a former Big 10 wrestler in Purdue’s O’Brien. "We’ve been working on a lot of submissions. It just worked out great."
Jones used a similar elbow to crush Stephan Bonnar in his upset win at UFC 94.
Jones was crafty throughout the fight coming out with a southpaw stance to begin both round and eventually returning to conventional. His kicks to legs were solid throughout the fight and he came to landing some huge head kicks. His length is going to be trouble for a lot of the light heavies in the UFC.
It was a special night for Jones, who was celebrating his daughter’s birthday today.
