Sit ups and crunches are the most commonly used waist exercises for most people. While these ab exercises can be effective up to a point, they certainly are not the most productive stomach exercises to do.
An exercise ball can give your abs a great workout. You will need to take care in the beginning, as balancing yourself can be a little awkward.
When you sit on the ball, put your hands on the side of the ball. Then lean backwards and raise the legs. Balancing on the ball properly may take a while. The less used muscles of the stomach get a workout as they help with the balance.
If this exercise was performed as normal on the ground, the stabilising muscles would not be targed. Begin to move the legs as if you pedalling a bicycle. After a bit of practice you will be able to do this without your hands resting on the ball, this is a great exercise for your waist.
The exercise ball will be used in the next exercise, where you perform a crunch by sitting on the ball. You will put your hands on your chest while you are seated on the ball while doing this exercise. The difference to a standard crunch will be that instead of pushing your torso forward, you will take your legs up to the torso. Pull your knees up towards your upper body while you lean back a little.
Your problem of your balance would fall to the stabiliser muscles. Perform this exercise in a slow manner, and you will definitely start to feel the burn in your abs.
The thing to keep in mind is that you need to pick waist exercises that are going to target different areas of the stomach. Doing this will ensure that your entire stomach area gets a good workout, and this will result in a far superior mid-section compared to just doing normal crunches and sit ups.

For martial artists front squats are great. They are hard, work the legs and the core. Not a traditional abs exercise by any means, but they certainly work. Plus you cannot beat good old fashioned leg raises too.
