Why Not Try Gracie Jiu-jitsu

Brazilian jiu jitsu schools can trace their roots to the early 1920s when the Gracie family began to learn jiu jitsu from a master visiting from Japan. Gracie Jiu-jitsu developed from the teaching Hélio Gracie and his brothers received into a discipline that would allow a smaller fighter to best a bigger and stronger one. Hélio continued to adapt the martial art techniques so that they became even more efficient and soon he was earning the respect of those around him.

As he grew more competent, Hélio introduced the world to the beginnings of Gracie Jiu-jitsu in a series of high profile matches. Despite not necessarily winning these matches, Hélio won acclaim for lasting far longer than anyone thought he would be able to against stronger and more experienced opponents. In 1951 he fought Masahiko Kimura, then considered to be the greatest jiu jitsu fighter in the world. Kimura claimed that should the match last longer than three minutes, then Hélio should be considered the winner; Hélio lasted for thirteen. In 1955, the longest fight in the world occurred when Hélio held off a fighter twenty years his junior and forty pounds heavier for three hours and forty minutes.

When Rorion Gracie, Hélio’s son, left Brazil to bring Gracie Jiu-jitsu to America, he intended to carry on his father’s legacy. The Gracies wanted to create jiu-jitsu academies to share the martial art techniques that they had adapted after decades of intense study with the rest of the world, and the United States was the perfect place to do so. Though Rorion initially struggled in setting up his Brazilian Jiu jitsu academy, he won increasingly larger numbers of students mainly by issuing the Gracie challenge. This was a call to any fighter of any discipline to meet him in hand-to-hand combat in order to see whose discipline was stronger.

All of this was creating an awareness of Gracie Jiu-jitsu in the martial arts world, but it was soon going to become practically a household name. Mixed martial arts tournaments were gathering a lot of interest in the late 80s and early 90s, as the quest to determine which martial art was the best was in full force. The Ultimate Fighting Championship was born out of this interest and in 1993 the first of many tournaments was held. Royce Gracie proved that jiu jitsu was a force to be reckoned with when he won that championship, and then did it again and again.

Of all the martial art disciplines out there, Gracie Jiu-jitsu is probably the most well known. It was a long hard road, going from Japan to Brazil, then to California and finally the rest of America and the world. Jiu-jitsu academies all over the world have students who have signed up based on watching what Royce Gracie did in the Ultimate Fighting Championships, and then from learning about what his ancestors accomplished.

The Trademark of Brazilian Jiu jitsu

Ever since Royce Gracie won three out of the first four Ultimate Fighting Championships, Brazilian jiu-jitsu academies have been springing up all over. You can find many different styles but Gracie Jiujitsu is probably the most famous. This discipline takes the martial art very seriously, and has at its core a philosophy on how to live one’s life in order to achieve the best results on the mat, and how to be more complete as a human being.

The first principle of Gracie Jiujitsu is about control. In a fight, this involves being the one who will dictate what happens during the fight. Part of this is in physically controlling your opponent and restricting his movements to what you want him to do; the other part is the self-control that you need to impose upon yourself so that you can make the best choices to win the fight. This is personal training at its best, and it is part of a healthy lifestyle. It is expected that you are able to exercise enough control to eat properly and take care of your health.

Patience is the second principle of Gracie Jiujitsu. Rushing the delivery of perfectly executed martial art techniques at the wrong time has no place in a fight. Success largely depends on waiting out your opponent so that he or she gets tired, giving you the time to find the holes in their defense and exploiting them. The same is said for how we conduct ourselves in our regular lives. Running around making impulsive decisions is more likely than not to result in failure, so patience is encouraged.

The final of Gracie Jiujitsu principles is efficiency. This is particularly important for a fight, since the foundation of this discipline is built on the assumption that you will be fighting someone stronger and bigger than yourself. Jiu jitsu schools will often promote the idea that you drain your opponent of his or her energy while conserving your own strength in order to finish the fight. This applies to daily living as well, with the idea that you are able to maximize your results through an efficient application of effort, whether it is in business or social situations.

As you can see, Gracie Jiujitsu goes well beyond the mat, and really the only people who will succeed in this discipline are the ones who are able to live their lives according to the ideals that the discipline is based upon. Brazilian jiu jitsu academies are everywhere nowadays, and you can probably find one that won’t require a commitment on your part to lead your life outside of the dojo according to the Gracie Principles. But whether that will result in you being a better fighter is unlikely, since how you are on the mat is not so different from how you are when off it.

Slim Tightening and Toning Treatments

There are many products aimed at buffing up the abdomen, which is one of the toughest areas to improve. There are workout DVDs, gym classes and diet books to help you trim excess fat. There are free weights, weight-training exercise machines and whey protein powders to help you build and strengthen your muscles. Then there are gels and lotions to improve your skin’s elasticity and help show off your newly sculpted abdomen. L’Oreal Body Expertise Sublime Slim Tightening and Toning Treatment Gel, Abs is one of the products that has received positive accolades for its ability to moisturize and firm up stomach skin — the final step in your tummy toning regimen.

According to the manufacturer, you should see results within three weeks of using L’Oreal Body Expertise Sublime Slim Tightening and Toning Treatment Gel, Abs. The stomach should appear firmer and flatter, improving definition. Sublime Slim abs uses “a phyto-toning complex which combines firming polymers with a derivative of a synthetic complex to create a cosmetic girdle to tighten skin.” X-Tensyl is the active ingredient that tightens the skin, while ceramide 2 (another active ingredient) conditions and firms the skin further. L’Oreal recommends this product to anyone who has experienced stomach sag due to “lifestyle, lack of physical exercise, pregnancy” or other causes.

“I have never felt so confident with my stomach, and I usually hide it, but now I feel like I can really show it off. It really helps to buff out the little extra you have going on,” says one reviewer of L’Oreal Body Expertise Sublime Slim Tightening and Toning Treatment Gel, Abs. Another person comments that you get everything you pay for with this product. “My stomach stays tight and firm,” she says. “I recommend this to anyone who really wants to have great abs and is willing to work towards getting them and keeping them.” Some people report having “a glow” or feeling “a pleasant tingling sensation” after putting on this product.

Some people feel that products like L’Oreal Body Expertise Sublime Slim Tightening and Toning Treatment Gel, Abs simply will not work. Yet others mistakenly believe that lotions and creams can cure all their body woes. L’Oreal is careful about not over-selling their product. They promise firmer skin and a generally flatter stomach in three weeks but they avoid claiming you’ll have a six-pack guaranteed. As we all know, getting that perfect stomach takes a lot of hard work. For some people, having a defined abdomen may just not be in their genetics. However, the price tag on this product is reasonable, so it’s worth a try if you feel you need just a little extra help achieving definition.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship

The jiu-jitsu technique became essential studying after the creation of the Ultimate Fighting Championship; a tournament designed to determine the most superior fighting discipline. As this was one of the first mixed martial arts competitions to be formally held, no one really knew what to expect. It was learned that most fights ended up on the ground, and those who knew how to control their opponents and submit them regardless of size and strength would emerge the winner. This is what Royce Gracie showed the world.

After Gracie proved that a command over the jiu-jitsu technique was essential for success in mixed martial arts competitions, all fighters began receiving some form of personal training in jiu-jitsu, and the UFC became a series of matches on the ground. A standup fighter was almost always doomed, for once the combatant who knew jiu-jitsu got him on the ground, a tap out from the striker was inevitable. Submissions in the form of chokes, arm bars, leg locks and so on became the norm for those early UFC matches.

Because all of this was new to the other fighters, submissions often occurred quite quickly. Yet as more people learned the jiu-jitsu technique, the fights on the ground lasted longer, sometimes with the two combatants seemingly locked in a stalemate, with one on top and the other trapped underneath. The audience began to get bored with this style of fighting and the promoters began to encourage participants to stay on their feet longer to provide more entertainment.

Some people believe the jiu-jitsu technique has disappeared in the recent tournaments of the UFC, but that’s not quite accurate. All fighters engaged in mixed martial arts tournaments have to study jiu-jitsu in order to be able to compete effectively. This means that these top fighters can more easily block and counter the different submissions and groundwork that fighters use when grappling. MMA and jiu jitsu still have a strong relationship.

The jiu-jitsu technique is still being used in the UFC, it’s just not the show stopper it once was. While Royce Gracie was able to use his training to end fights by taking the fight to the ground and causing his opponents to tap out, these techniques are now just part of the fight, and not necessarily the end of one. Just as boxing is still alive and well in the UFC through the repeated use of jabs and crosses and footwork, jiu-jitsu has become permanently infused with the UFC as a natural way of fighting.

Exercise Bikes vs. Treadmills Exercise Bikes vs. Treadmills

So, you have made the ultimate decision that you are going to start exercising every day or at least 3 times a week at home.  There are hundreds of pieces of home cardiovascular equipment available.  The most popular are treadmills and stationary bikes.  In deciding between the two, you should compare long-term sustainability, the effectiveness of the workouts, and safety.  Also, should you go with a commercial grade item like a commercial grade treadmills or will a non-commercial grade treadmill last as long and work as well?  But, first let’s get started with the major hurdles people run into.

Overcoming Boredom

Treadmills

Treadmills

The biggest obstacle to a home exercise routine is sticking with it.  You don’t have to drive to a gym, so your home fitness equipment is more convenient.  The problem is that other distractions are just as convenient at home.  The key is to make your routine fun.  You want to look forward to your daily workout.  You have to be realistic.  Playing with the heart rate monitor or watching the calorie counter go up will only be fun the first couple of times you exercise.

Treadmill vs. Boredom

On a non-commercial or commercial treadmill, you walk.  Walking isn’t that fun.  You can walk at different speeds, but that isn’t really much more fun.  If you get a treadmill that offers an incline, that keeps it a bit more interesting.  Walking uphill isn’t exactly fun, but it’s different.  It certainly presents a challenge.

You can’t really read on a treadmill because you are bouncing up and down.  You can’t keep your eyes on the same sentence, and you usually end up with a headache.  Basically, the only thing fun to do on a treadmill is watch television or movies.  If you are really into TV or movies and are able to put your treadmill in front of a television, you can probably keep your treadmill workout from becoming too boring.  Problems consist of commercials, the noise coming from the machine, and again, the bouncing.

Exercise Bikes vs. Boredom

Exercise bikes are unique in that many of them come programmed with various biking routines.  You simulate different courses that require you to sprint, pedal uphill, and perform at different levels within one workout without having to keep pressing buttons and changing everything. You can even select random programs so you don’t know what’s coming, which really keeps you on your toes. Some exercise bikes can even be plugged into televisions and video games to let you interactively pedal through visual courses.

On upright exercise bikes, you run into some of the same problems as treadmills as far as reading is concerned.  Recumbent bikes, however, allow your hands to be free to hold a book or magazine, video game controller, or phone.  Multi-tasking during an exercise bike workout keeps it from becoming boring and allows your workout to more easily fit into a busy schedule.

Defeating boredom to successfully keep up a long-term exercise routine is much easier with an exercise bike than a treadmill.
